Actor Nicolas Cage is selling his £5 million home on the edge of Bath.

The film star who will be switching on the city's Christmas lights next month is putting 18th century Midford Castle on the market - hard on the heels of his decision to sell his home in The Circus.

It had been said that the Oscar-winning actor had sold his city centre home to concentrate on renovation work at the stone castle.

Cage had bought both properties two years ago.

A spokesman for the 45-year-old, who will tomorrow join in activities for a fundraising day at the Royal United Hospital, also has a home at Baltonsborough near Glastonbury.

He said: "He will still be staying in the Bath area and he will still be turning on the Christmas lights.

"You will still see him in the Bath area on a regular basis.

"We are looking at having one property to cover all his needs in the Bath area."

Midford Castle is a grade one listed building which has seven bedrooms and comes with two cottages, a ruined chapel and 58 acres of land.

It was bought by Michael and Isabel Briggs in 1961 for just £15,000 and they began a 45-year labour of love to restore everything to its former glory, while modernising the interior.

The castle was built on the whim of card player and raconteur Henry Disney Roebuck, who wanted to live in a castle but could not find one he liked.

Roebuck had made his fortunes gambling and winning at the card tables of wealthy London society in the 1770s.

The castle has an unusual three-sided design, and local legend has it that he designed it so the footprint matched the ace of clubs - a card with which he had the most luck.

But that legend is disputed. Post-war architecture expert Christopher Hussey discounted the theory in 1944, suggesting that Roebuck was "a wealthy romantic who chose the plan and design of the building chiefly for aesthetic reasons."

He also pointed out that the 'stem' of the ace of clubs is a porch added by later owners in the early 19th century.

Cage will be at the RUH for a Ted's Big Day Out event from 12.30 tomorrow and will switch on the Christmas lights on November 26.

As you can see in the link below, Tilham Barn is lovely. It´s the only one of Nic´s homes I´ve seen pics of that I find has a sense of cozyness about it, but then that´s only IMHO.

U.S. actor Nicolas Cage is selling a castle near Bath, England, at a significant loss due to mounting tax problems, property market sources say.

The unidentified sources told The Sunday Times of London Cage owes at least $6.5 million in back taxes in the United States and has agreed to sell Midford Castle for almost $4.9 million.

The price falls short of the $7.75 million Cage paid for the property in July 2007. In addition, the "Ghost Rider" star spent an unspecified amount of money on a restoration project intended to improve the property.

Cage sold an area townhouse in March at a loss of almost $490,000, the newspaper said. He still owns Tilham Barn, a home in the British village of Baltonsborough.

Frankie Lederman, who sold the home to the 45-year-old actor in June 2006, said Cage truly enjoys the Baltonsborough home.

"He has told me he loves it here," Lederman told the Sunday Times. "He values the peace, tranquility and privacy."
