From the Greek name (Nikolaos) which meant "victory of the people" from Greek (nike) "victory" and (laos) "people". Saint Nicholas was a 4th-century bishop from Anatolia who, according to legend, saved the daughters of a poor man from lives of prostitution.
He is the patron saint of children, sailors and merchants, as well as Greece and Russia. He formed the basis for the figure known as Santa Claus (created in the 19th century from Dutch Sinterklaas), the bringer of Christmas presents.
Due to the renown of the saint, this name has been widely used in the Christian world. It has been common in England since the 12th century, though it became a bit less popular after the Protestant Reformation. The name has been borne by five popes and two czars of Russia.

Today I heard the song La Isla Bonita and got to thinking about name etomology. Truth is I've always enjoyed finding out what names mean or where they originate from.
So............after hearing the song I first did a search on the name "Bonita". I used this site:
Means "pretty" from the Scottish word bonnie, which was itself derived from Middle French bon "good". It has been in use as an American given name since the 19th century, and it became especially popular after the movie 'Gone with the Wind' (1939), in which it was the nickname of Scarlett's daughter
AND lo and behold I think I now know why my mother named me Bonnie!!! She loved the movie GONE WITH THE WIND! I think I'm named for Scarlett and Rhetts daughter! LOL!
So........how about if people share the meaning of their names and if they know......how they came to be named the name they have???
