I didn't notice that when I first watched the movie, either. But I found that When he said this sentence ,the Chinese subtitle changed into Chinese! After I listened to it again,I noticed He was saying Chinese !!!His pronunciation is ......
Nics character is obsessed with Ava but....I think once he gets her "the chase" is kinda over. There is a saying that a man never "chases after a bus he has already caught!!" and, of course, its not true with all of us......but I do think its a common fact of life regarding infidelity and unfaithfulness so I can understand (if not condone!) this set up in the film.
Anyway im getting too deep..wonderful film with great performances all round!
My whole take on the movie - and his character - is just my opinion. It's not written in stone, and I'm certainly not a movie critic. That being said, perhaps this is a movie that is worth seeing more than once, if nothing else to gain deeper insight into how the role is played. I'm sure when I see it again, I'll have a different perspective.
He had nothing to gain? He's a man..it's not about gaining something..he's gone a long time/away from the wife..I think it's called biological needs and desires.
But throughout the movie, Yuri never gave any indication that he was a man driven by those needs. For him, it was all about guns, money, power and the ego trip. He never really seemed to have much of an emotional side at all.

He had nothing to gain? He's a man..it's not about gaining something..he's gone a long time/away from the wife..I think it's called biological needs and desires. I believe that said a lot ABOUT the kind of person he was..it was ALL about him. I liked the character of Yuri..I thought we saw what he was..a man driven by what he was good at..and he had no conscious about it.
Well, I just saw it and thought it was... okay. I don't think Nic was given a chance to fill out his character, so to speak. Yuri seemed kind of two-dimensional to me, but I really don't think it was any fault of Nic's... the character itself just kind of fell flat to me.
A couple of things I never understood... if Yuri was born in the Ukraine but was raised in Brooklyn, wouldn't he either have a slight Ukranian accent (from being around his family) or a heavy Brooklyn one? Why didn't he or his brother have any kind of discernable accent at all? Also, I didn't understand why Yuri was cheating on his wife all the time... he wasn't a womanizer (he certainly didn't give off that aura, anyway), he was supposedly crazy about Ava, so why did he cheat on her? He had nothing at all to gain from doing it, and yet it still happened.
Also, it didn't seem like Yuri was intelligent enough or charismatic enough to pull off business with the magnitude that he did. It's odd... he comes from virtually nothing and jumps into arms dealing almost overnight. That part didn't make any sense to me, but still, it was an OK movie. I don't think it was money wasted. Oh, and the opening sequence of bullet making was way cool.
On a more salacious note, seeing Nic in the shower with Bridget Moynahan... I wanted some of that. BAD. Life can be so cruel
I think I'll go this afternoon - I have nothing better to do. Ideally, I would have a nice-looking date to go with me and maybe pay my way, LOL. But as it stands, I will brave the theatre alone.
I asked my mom today if she was going to the movies - she and my dad go pretty much every weekend. She said that SHE wants to see "Just Like Heaven" with Reese Witherspoon, but my dad wants to see (and these are her words, not mine) "that awful Nicolas Cage movie about war". I said she would probably like it, and that Nic was a great actor, and she said, "Oh, I just don't care for him... and he's creepy-looking.".
I can't believe I'm related to any person who would say such a thing, LOL.
Caught the matinee of this today. It will not disappoint. He looks great, his acting is superb, and I love it when he does voice overs. Feels like he's talking to me...Go see it.
Nic Cage.. 4-30-05 Riding high on his recent appointment by movie fans as a "National Treasure," Nicolas Cage will be going from charismatic adventurer to morality-laden arms dealer. of course Nic makes every movie he participate in an amazing movie ... we all love him very much ... i want to ask if there is any new informations about LOW ... especially after the release date of TWM has been delayed ... what about release date of LOW ... any news????????????
I have been a fan of Nicolas Cage, well, for ever! I love all his movies - not just because he is in them all of course, but because he MAKES the character. You don't see Nicolas Cage - you see "Castor Troy" in Face/Off or "Rick Santoro" in Snakeeyes or "Seth" in City of Angels. I think you get the picture. Anyway he makes the character what the character is...and that makes the movie!!!
I think that if nic is in it, it'll be great. because no matter what he plays, he pulls it off. unlike some actors who seem to play the same character over and over again. nic is amazing.
It seems pretty good. Like she said if Nic's in it it will most likely be good. He brings something to every film he's in. Even if the film is crap his acting is always good and he plays the characters great.
