I was surprised by the end as well. I thought he was amazing. But I don't like those sad ending movies like "City of Angels". I mean I love the movies, just I wish for a better ending. But I guess that's what makes them different from other movies, and probably one of the reasons that compelled him to be in them in the first place. He has such great depth and I admire and adore him.
OK, I'll admit it... I got a little weepy at the end too. Up until that last scene, I kept thinking it was going to be a happy ending, that he was going to come back to Sera sober and clean months or even years later. But no... he died in a hotel bed, just like he said he would. And he had that bottle in his hand to the very end.
I can't believe I waited so long to see this movie... finally watched it tonight.
His acting blew me away... he deserved that Oscar. Simply brilliant. His character was so vulnerable and yet so giving and loving. My heart broke at the end... Elisabeth Shue was outstanding as well.
