"His ears are too big and he looks like an ape." That's how Warner Bros. executive Darryl F. Zanuck reportedly described a young Clark Gable, who would go on to become a Hollywood heartthrob, Oscar winner and star of "Gone With the Wind."
Since a production company is conducting a talent search to play the film legend in a biopic titled "Frankly, My Dear ... A Fable About Gable," Zanuck's description should be noted by any large-eared, simianlike actors out there. Famous names that may fit the bill aren't in the running -- they're looking for nobodies.
"(Producers) believe Clark Gable would appreciate giving an unknown but talented actor the chance to be the next Clark Gable," says Mark Morris, who is overseeing this publicity stunt/casting contest seeking actors to play four major characters in the movie -- Marilyn Monroe, Carole Lombard, and a young and old Gable.
So how is the contest going? Among those who submit questions to the gossip page of Parade Magazine, the buzz is palpable. Walter Scott's "Personality Parade" column recently addressed queries about the "next Clark Gable." Scott even daydreamed about actors, imagining George Clooney or Topher Grace in the role.
Frankly My Dear Productions was envisioning Russell Crowe, Gerard Butler or Nicolas Cage as Gable, but the dreams were dashed -- as most dreams are -- by James Cameron. "Following the blockbuster success of 'Avatar,'" their news release reads, " ... the producers have opted to cast unknowns in the major roles."
Is this disappointing news for Clooney, Crowe and Parade readers? Perhaps. But it's encouraging for struggling actors looking for a big break. So if you've got Clark Gable's swollen ears or Marilyn Monroe's oversize, uh, charisma, send a dramatic reading (60 seconds, WMV or MP3 file) to law.entertainment@yahoo.com.
Then keep your fingers crossed, ya big ape.
