Most of Nic´s movies are set in the present era. To my recollection, he´s only protrayed a historical figure once, the sculler Ned Hanlan (see link below).

Captain Corelli´s Mandonlin (about the true mass execution of Italian soldiers by Nazis in Kefalonia during World War II)

Windtalkers (about the secret Navajo code used in the Pacific campaign during World War II)

Time to Kill (about the Italian occupation of Ethiopia during World War II)

Now that I think of it, all 3 movies are about the same war...
