On playing the part of Speckles, Cage could relate. Im always in touch with my inner mole, he stated and related how he got involved with the production. Jerry Bruckheimer (producer) asked me if Id be interested in doing this movie on the last day of National Treasure 2. I have this voice which I call my stress voice, where Ive worked a lot or done a lot of night shoots and havent slept.  Rather than resorting to profanity or yelling, I raise my voice an octave or two and I start laughing because its so absurd and I cant take anything seriously. So I said, [he talks in a very indistinguishable voice] 'Can I talk like this?' because it was already there and he said, absolutely, which shocked me and I said all right. Its on.

      And dont think because you see Cage in a movie with a bunch of guinea pigs, he is a fan of them. I just knew I wasnt going to play a guinea pig, he laughs  There was no way I was going to play a guinea pig.  There was no way on earth.  No offense, but I think theyre obnoxious. I need an animal with a long tail that looks like he says, I dare you to pick me up.  Thats the animal I need to play. I like moles, I like the way they look, I like Speckles, his claws, his little eyes, his goggles. Everything about him smacks of character and attitude. They have a purpose, they have a personality, they have an opinion. Theyre not cute domesticated little furballs.

      All for quality entertainment, it was important for Cage to do this film. I just want to keep kids smiling; its getting harder and harder with whats going in the world, people are losing their jobs, families are tense. Any chance I can get to make a movie that the whole family can enjoy, Im going to take it.
