RE: I declare the KNOWING debate open! LOL! *beware: all kinds of spoilers ahead*

Youīre right, weīve neglected those poor little creatures with all that deep chatter going on...

I personally donīt know what to make of them, apart from the obvious: that they represented all innocent irrational beings. Any thoughts? What did you think of them, Zookeeper?

Goodness, what a deep thread! I just wanted to ask about the bunnies the kids held at the end.

New topic: Bunnies

Yes, they are!    It's like the dichotomy between someone who lives in the dark (disbelieving and having no faith) vs those who live in the light (going forth in innocense and childlike trust).

Cool find once again Mara!

I think whoever decided to use onyx in the movie had researched it well!

I have used onyx in my work (I'm a crystal healer) and know that it can stimulate the making of wise decisions and helps people to become masters of their own futures.
It helps people to recognise their personal strengths and their understanding of reality as well helping them to keep important information in their memory.
All this seems to fit in well with the moviesmile.gif

The black stones are, along with the wings of the aliens/angels, the most debated upon subject of this movie... Everyone has an a personal opinion about them, but I suspect they mean nothing, like the 2001: A Space Odyssey monolith. You can make out whatever you want, and it will suit the movie perfectly right, since the whole thing is open to all kinds of interpretations...

Having said that, my favorite threads about KNOWING on Imdb had many ideas about the black stones, and the one I liked the most was, that the onyx rocks were like a trail that the aliens/angels were leaving for the main characters to find the landing site of their spacecraft. Sounds smart enough, huh?

Anyway, the fact that these albino, translucent beings were leaving these solid black rocks is visually fascinating.

Also, the meaning of onyx, according to this site, stands for many far-fetched things (I love the bit about "healthy egotism"...)

okay, now someone needs to tell me what they think of the black rocks, 'cause it's driving me nuts trying to figure them out. classic sybolism? random choice? visually necessary for the camara? AAAAHHHHGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the tree just struck me as hopeful and insistent that life will go on no matter what. much better than a roach. he's already done that LOL :)

Wow Randy I absolutely love your thinking process! (BTW: no editing, unless a bomb is dropped everyoneīs entitled to their own opinions)

Letīs begin with the tangent: Iīm acquainted with hemangiomas because our little Spanish princess Leonor, oldest daughter of our crown prince, was born with one of these marks on her nose, and now sheīs three and itīs almost totally gone on its own accord (cute little girl BTW).  Iīm happy to hear that your daughter didnīt have any of the serious health problems the doctors had predicted. You were a brave mom and your courage was duly rewarded.

On the movie: Cool ideas about everything you touched upon. I agree Caleb had a different prespective on things because of his hearing peculiarities, which enabled him to keep an open mind about things and accept the surprising turn of events with equanimity. Love your Dylan quote, itīs very much to the point!

Thx for your input!

WOW! where to begin? i apologize in advance for all spelling and grammar mistakes. ahemm.... yes, i agree with jenn. they had wings. angels vs. aliens? as jenn pointed out, angels by virtue of not being of this planet are intrinsically aliens. i don't think you can look at this movie without having some spiritual and/or religious connection to the themes. so, i will try to avoid bringing these up, but will just leave it up to our lovely moderators to edit me. none of this stuff is going to be in order, so bear with me. let's start with caleb. WARNING: personal tangent.... when my daughter was born the doctors' told me she would not live. if she did, she would be blind, deaf, at the least have brain damage, but most likely have downsyndrome. she is now a perfectly monstrous two year old who has a bizarre fascination with nic (wonder where that came from?LOL) and a hemangeoma on her face. that is a raised red area that looks like a very ripe grape. BTW, it's almost gone. even today, that's what people notice first about her. i don't see it at all. SO... as caleb's solemn, intelligent character with a hearing device, i saw him as a symbol that physical perfection is worthless. in the end, he was chosen to propogate the new race because of his internal persona. or, because he was more sensitive to differences and more accepting. this is a personal take b/c of my own experiences. everyone will see it in reference to his/her own life. i saw the spacecraft as a version of noah's ark. not from a religious standpoint necessarily, but an allegorical one. as to why koestler gave him up? let's do a little bob dylan quote here.

God said to Abraham
"Kill me a son"
Abe said "man you must be putting me on"
God said "no"
Abe said "what"
God said "you can do what you want Abe but
The next time you see me coming you better run."
Abe said "where you want this killing done"
God said "out on Highway 61"
-BOB DYLAN

so the sacrificial lamb is saved.
next - family reunion...
death comes to us all. appreciate who and what you have while you can, and don't waste time with petty grievances.
the solar flare.... fire is cleansing. burn a forest and it regrows healthier. interpret as you will. the numbers take a man who is a literalist and force him to think outside the box. as for the stones, i have so many reasons for those, i can't decide. if i come to a definite decision, i'll let you know:)
this is way to long now, so gonna sign off with.....
COOL THREAD MARA, AND THANKS NIC!

OK, the package wrapped in gift paper will remain unopened, like the present John received from his wife in the movie... and thatīs not a bad thing necessarily, I mean, Nic himself is in favor of ambiguity so... letīs remain ambivalent about it!

Thread closed.

Anyhooooooo.....................I'm enjoying the read!

I will quickly say this.  I love the fact that Nic has such intelligent fans!

Thatīs a pivotal theme of the movie right? Some people believe in angels as a source of energy, other as a religious manifestations... take your pic.

Jenny, you brought up a very interesting topic, thanks.

To contribute to it though, one must resort to his/her own set of beliefs... and I donīt have any. Yep, I go by without beliefs per se, only logical explanations that suit me at every moment in my life. Whenever I cannot find a logical explanation, then I merely allow myself the benefit of the doubt. After all, my personal anthem, like many agnostics, is "Imagine" by John Lennon. For me, "above thereīs only sky".

Therefore, I donīt think the intangible does it for me: that discards angels and aliens, LOL! I donīt trust what I donīt see by myself. I do trust some people like Einstein, Bertrand Russell, Jorge Luis Borges and the like. I have my own opinions on the matter of course (and thatīs just my opinion). In my opinion, magical thinking is a convetion of the human mind which helps us cope with the unfeasible, the unattainable and the incomprehensible in our lives. When we need to deal with our primal fears, we revert to magical thinking, which can go by many names and get many different forms from one culture to the other. Like Phil tells John in KNOWING: "Systems [that find meaning in numbers] are a dime in dozen. Why? Because people see what they want to see in them". Thatīs the impression I get too, that itīs just in our minds. And thatīs a good thing we can get hold of this useful tool, I mean, this way we donīt feel so helpless. But as I said, thatīs just my opinion and I donīt mean to offend anybody... please forgive me if I did because I would never impose my views and I would hate sounding categorical...and I of course welcome any rebuttal you may feel to write here, it will be very enriching for everybody to learn of different and even opposing views on this matter... After all, this movie is designed to bring up debates right?

But this doesnīt mean I deny what I cannot conceive of. I understand that for most people, their set of beliefs and their faith is an integral part of their lives, and I would say rightfully so, because it helps them cope with their lot. And I honestly belive thatīs a great choice. I have a lot of respect for religious doctrines and life philosophies alike, their set of values and their scheme of things. And I must say that I feel a lot of sympathy for Buddhists, I greatly admire their stand in life. But for me, theyīre all just an attempt to make sense out of something that maybe hasnīt any. Like the faithless philosophies... Itīs a human necessity, I guess, to furnish our world in the room of our heads, to whittle it all down to better cope with the enormity before us.

Well maybe I disregarded something in what I said above. I do belive in something: good will. The world is full of godd-willed people, and thatīs the only miracle I acknowledge. Iīve been luckly enough to get to know some of these wonderful people, and I must say that some of them are in this forum... Thanks for beign how you are!!

Why I got so pompous all of a sudden escapes me: maybe I got too much free time in my hands, today is a bank holiday in Madrid and Iīm lingering in my pajamas in front of the breakfast tray at 12:50pm, so I must get a shower and meet my friends who expect me for... lunch!! Iīm stuffed already...

Have a NICe day everyone, and please excuse the long-winded post... *looking down in shame* I wonīt do it again, promise! LOL!

to make you more confused dear mara...............

what do you think about difference between aliens and angels?
because there are some papers I red many years before about the Babylon age and about those things around.

There was not clear declaration about"angels" - those ancient people had spoken about "those who came from the heaven"..so
there is also pretty much evidences about how they made a picture of those "angles" and their " flying homes" which mimic space crafts..............

The book was written ba Daniken,
and also what about old cultures on South America continent - those Aztec cultures - building big pyramides to be closer to these beings.there are also pictures of "spacecrafts"

so no matter who they were, for me it is important, they were able to save our kids.

Jenny just switched to maternal mode.
kiss and hugz from my office

Oh come on people, I know you saw the movie.... donīt be shy, weīd love to hear from you! Please share your thoughts!

Sure you have made up your mind by now: were the whisper people angels or aliens? What did the black stones stand for? Did you like the last scene with the white tree? Did this movie leave a good or bad taste in your mouth? Why?

Then you answered the question, Jenny! You saw the wings and you took those strange beings for angels... Then I assume youīre interpretating the plot from a religious perspective. Great answer! THANKS!

Please forgive me if I wrote a lengthy post, itīs just that, as you point out, my job is incredibly, pitifully, distressingly B-O-R-I-N-G. But of course all of you donīt have so much idle time in your hands, soooo.... give short answers if you feel like it. No sweat, LOL!

I canīt believe that you made it during office hours. LOL, pretty boring job, right?

Dear mara, in spity I have seen this movie one week ago, I have to make a confession.....
I do not have any appropriate answer to your questions YET.
All of my neurons are now processing the data............so no answer awailable, I am still looking for the explanation of KNOWING for me, beause as you said before, this is about choosing, and I am not sure yet what I would choose.

I have to "digest" the movie itself, and then let you know.
But there is one think I am sure about - there were wings- for sure, and I woud believe those "beings" were angles.

Iīll give you my two cents first:

Talk about suspension of disbelief! This movie has so many layers and makes such a good job of manipulating the audience that it makes it impossible not to take everything about it in a twofold (or more) fashion. I have a feeling that you can answer ANY of the questions above in whatever sense you choose, and youīre still gonna be always right and never wrong about the KNOWING script. The important thing is not choosing between one option or the other, but evaluating if your choices are fulfilling or not to you. As Koestler tells Caleb when heīs accused of denying the existence of the afterlife:" I never said that, I just said we donīt know for sure".

I think that ambiguity is totally intentional, since the script is designed to make you think about your choices in life, no less. Whatīs your stand on the big questions? Usually weīre only faced with this kind of profound thinking when weīre in a life-threatening situation that makes us re-evaluate our priorities. Hence the end of the world situation Weīre put into Koestlerīs shoes by witnessing all those terror or suspenseful scenes, horrendous crashes and distressing against-the-clock races towards a dim hope that proves hopeless. Also, IMO this movie is intentionally pushing you aside, even though itīs deeply set in reality and the performances are totally realistic. But you as audience are being asked to reflect on the symbolic nature of the events and characters and attitudes that are being depicted. And that means that thereīs a degree of almost hyperrealism (hence the red digital camera in this movie?) that looks really threatening, just as threatening as when youīre faced with the big truths weīre so afraid of. (Maybe thatīs what Nic meant when he talked about being "abstract" in interviews?)

And itīs all about choices because itīs all about choosing between being confronted by uncertainties/or remaining ignorant because ingorance is bliss. Thatīs why the title makes reference to knowledge. "Knowing" allows you freedom of choice, that is to say, free will. Which is what Koestler mentions to Caleb in the farewell scene: "They could have taken you away from me, but they didnīt. You gotta go with them. But YOU have to choose".

Having said so, I believe Nic does such a great job impersonating this desperate, shattered man thrown by the circumstances into a whirlwind of conflicting feelings, that you cannot help but identify with his predicament No one like Nic can play uncertainty and inner turmoil to a tee. IMO his son in the movie is deliberately solemn and aloof, because his character Caleb stands for the survival of the species, but also for the unattainable nature of truth. IMO his costar Rose Byrne doesnīt keep up, but thatīs also because her character doesnīt have the courage to face the hard truth of her own mortality. She egotistically wants to hold on to her daughter (which stands for her former convictions) and not to bow to the evidence and ends up being destroyed by her own panic. Koestler, on the other hand, resignedly gives up his son (his past certainties) for the better good and complies with the new situation as best he can. When he sees the spacecraft, or the Ezequiel wheel, he fall to his knees in surrender because the evidence above him is overwhelming

(Thatīs the moment of the movie I disagree with, because for a brief moment the script begins to loose that uncanny ambiguity that makes it so great and seems to take sides until the ambiguous end, which is a shocker and a very bold artistic choice with that powerful image of that dream-like land which we can either decide is another planet or the afterlife or...  The music in the soundtrack in that moment resembles the Beethovenīs piece we just listened to moments before while the planet was being destroyed, so thereīs a continuity and a significance there, but the funeral sense is lost here and the orchestra sounds rather triumphant in this scene).

I love the scene where Koestler is reunited with her father though... Their embrace tells volumes about reconciling the two seemingly opposed theories, determinism vs. chaos....

In short: for me this is no science fiction or terror tale, itīs a philosophical proposal to make you face your inner beliefs and maybe conclude that theyīre just beliefs and not convictions because we could be surprised by the turn of events in our lives and end up acknowledging the unthinkable, like Koestler.

I personally donīt belive in a Grand Scheme behind things around us. But I believe in our own capacities and responsibility towards them. And since this movie can also be interpreted as the end of the world being caused by our carelessness handling our planetīs resources (resulting in climate change) it could be taken also as a cautionary tale of sorts.

I know that was too long... but thatīs just me, I was bored today, LOL! Feel free to post short answers, Ok??

(Sorry-sorry-sorry this is such a long-winded post, thatīs owing to some idle time on my part: the sad truth is, I didnīt feel like working today at the office. I know, Iīm a cheater and I should be ashamed. But my bosses really earned it you know... thatīs no excuse *bows head to hide evil grin*)

I know I said that we would wait some more, but.. you know, the movie opened a few weeks ago and I reckon that by now more or less most of you had the chance to see it, soooo letīs discuss it in depth, since it is intended to be deep, hehehe

Of all of Nicīs movies scripts, this is the one that strikes me as most open to a number of different interpretations, and it touches on nearly as many subjects as the Adaptation script., which wasnīt as ambivalent as this one but had a greater scope IMHO. I guess there are as many interpretations for the meaning of KNOWING as members of the audience, and Iīm looking forward to hearing yours It will be enriching for all of us to read your point of view here (you, yes you.... donīt look back, LOL! Arenīt you willing to share your thoughts? No right or wrong answers here, just different ideas we can all learn from)

Where to begin.

This movie contains powerful imagery that stands up for philosophical concepts (for many, religious concepts). Also, there are many storyline points everybodyīs talking about, and some others that arenīt so popular. Among them:

  • The wings (Were, or werenīt they there? Did you see them? Do they make the aliens into angels just like that? Were the whisper people aliens to begin with?)
  • The spacecraft: Was their spaceship a stylized version of Ezequielīs wheel, which in turn can stand either for the first UFO in history or for a symbol of the interconnection of everything in the universe, the karma dynamics of our actions, or simply a delirium caused by an altered mental state? Thatīs a tough one for sure.
  • The black stones (Onyx? Whatīs the meaning of this round stones being thrown at significant moments like landmarks? Do the stones stand for mere trails to track down the whereabouts of the landing field, or rather do they stand for letting go of your fears and for determination in times of need?)
  • The numbers (Is the script pointing at Numerology, or are they just a McGuffin and theyīre not really THAT essential to the storyline?)
  • The lethal solar flare: ditto. Are we doomed by climate change, by a random solar storm stronger than usual? Is the end of the world a mere pretext to make all of us reflect upon the higher meaning of existence? Or is it the excuse to insert two superb catastrophe scenes that manipulate the audience into feeling as fragile and terrified and hopeless and destitute of certainties as Koestler is?
  • What does Calebīs hearing device stand for? Our inability to pay attention to whatīs around us? To the truths hidden in plain sight? To whatīs really meaningful in life?
  • The final sacrifice. Is Koestler just saving his offspring, and by doing so hoping that a part of himself and his beloved wife will survive? Or is he acknowledging that, to allow everything to begin anew, mankind must renounce the past and give up the most precious legacy, our civilization as we know it?
  • The white tree. Is it the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil in the garden of Eden, or rather the pagan tree of life renewing itself? Thatīs no small point, itīs the key to the whole movie IMO. Is the ending championing the determinist theory (mankind can only thrive if we follow the precepts of good and evil conceived for a higher purpose), or the chaos theory (the survival of the fittest makes it possible for mankind to adapt to the new environment, but thatīs just a product of pure randomness according to the Theory of Evolution)?????
  • And last but not least, one thatīs being much talked about in forums: Whatīs with Bambyīs family being set on fire??? Makes for a childhood trauma revisited right? LOL!  (just teasing you here guys).

Wow. So much to think about. But the above list is not intended to give you a headache, just some food for thought LOL! Sure you can come up with even a longer list of questions
