Oom, thanks for the welcome. I don't know at what point during the movie that it jumped out at me, but it was so obvious and I'm surprised no one else had picked up on the sub context of the movie. It has become one of my favorite movies and I'm looking forward to making some free time to watch again to see if I can pick up on anything else.
First up........welcome to the forum BHoward! Feel free to jump in to any conversation...........and to....continue to do as you have with your post.......start any new topics. We love discussions here!
I found your list of coincidences to be fascinating, astute and need I say it? Right on Target!
It is well known in Hollywierd that actors and directors often put winks or symbolic personal nuances into their movies. I wouldn't doubt it if Nic took the original screenplay for KNOWING and the character of John K and Caleb and 'tweaked' it to indulge his personal fancy for Superman.
:)

Guys, new to this forum. I really enjoyed the movie and I see the religion/science debates all over the web about this movie. Roger Ebert really enjoyed the movie and he has an ongoing blog about it. As part of my movie fandom, one of my favorite genres is the comic book movie. As you all may know Nic was at one time, up for the role of Superman under Tim Burton's direction. While I'm big fan of Nic, I never thought he was right for the part. Also everyone is probably aware, Nic is a big Superman fan, so much so, he named his child Kal-El. With all of this, one aspect of this movie I think everyone is missing, I feel, I believe this is Nic's Superman movie. Here are some of the similarities that I came across while watching the movie. There are too many to be coincidence. I'd like to know what you guys think about this. Thanks.
1. Cage plays a scientist, who in the end, discovers that the world is doomed to destruction and "allows" his son to go to another world.
2. The young son's name is Caleb Koestler. Well the initials first off, CK=Clark Kent, and then the name Caleb, just switch the C for K and the B for L and you get Kal-El
3. The planet is destroyed by the sun
4. The spaceships the son is "allowed" to leave in bare a resemblance to the Donner S:TM spaceship, Kryptonian structures and to the Fortress of Solitude.
5. While it appears that they are more children survivors, it can be argued they are only two survivors of the planet, ie: Kal-El and Kara.
6. Cage's characters named John Koestler= Jonathan Kent
I watched my brand new DVD yesterday night. And I noticed that Caleb´s first line in the movie is he talking to his friend the rabbit (that he is holding when Nic asks him to see the Saturn rings on the telescope). Fast forward to the final scenes, and Caleb tells his dad that the wisper people will let him keep the rabbit in the other planet... So I guess the rabbit could stand for a connection with the past and all mankind´s previous natural heritage before Earth´s downfall?
Interesting point of view. Please handle with care.
(I´m posting this solely as proof that the impact of his movie will be an enduring one, after all it doesn´t address the big questions for nothing, LOL!)
That scene alone should garner an Oscar for Nic. I seriously do not know of any other actor who can emote so much just from his eyes and facial expressions......

Hmm.... maybe for me it was the whole 'destruction of the earth thing' :P The movie just had a sense of... hopelessness. But also I have a thing of children being separated from parents... That scene where he had to say goodbye to his son was just heart-wrenching.
I can understand this movie was disturbing at some levels... like in this clip below. But I love horror, especially the kind of horror taht looks like daily routine because the story is set in a realistic setting.
p.s. i didn't find the movie disturbing. i guess it takes a lot to hit that level with me...... clockwork orange, on the other hand, freaked me out! i've seen it several times because i never remember anything about it, like my brain won't compute. when my brain rejects something so strongly, that disturbs me.... BTW, LOVE LOVE LOVE the pic treaureprotector!

all errors here are due to faulty memory, so feel free to correct me. the stag is symbolic in many ancient cultures. biblically it represents the battle of good vs. evil as when a stag stomped that serpent in the garden of eden. it also shows up in celtic and arthurian legends. i don't remember the connection to artemis, but there is one. i am unsure which culture thought it to be the link between man and god, but i'll check my stuff at home. glad i saved all those papers i wrote :) fire can be viewed in just about any "light" (haha) you chose. cleansing, purification, banishment of darkness, war, destruction, renewal. hmmm.... good question. i'll give it some thought.

Here's another question about the animals in KNOWING to ponder......
What does everyone think the burning STAG represents?

I love your "wink" idea... Hope it was that, and that poor Adam & Eve didn´t end up being served as dinner for the kids... But why not? Every interpretation is equally right or wrong according to Nic himself. Zoo Keeper wrote:
Hmm, I have some wild ideas about this, it could be a wink to Nic being born a 'Bunny' in the Chinese Zodiac or perhaps they were just a ploy to get the kids to go along with the idea (think cookies) and then of course, as gross as this sounds, and the least likely... the bunnies' could represent food for the two children as they procreate.

welcome zookeeper! love that you are jumoing right in :) as for the bunnies, i saw them as a symbol of preserving innocence in the face of loss. of course bonnie is probably more on target here LOL

Hmmm... i think what both of you said. But also, there was a running animal theme throughout the movie, that the kids knew about animals. Because they'll sort of be like Adam and Eve, being the stewards to animals and such.
I kinda think that the bunnies were there as a not so sublimal message that the children would have to go forth and procreate as the bunnies do.............ya know the old saying 'multiply like bunnies'?
