Director attributed the two accidents this past week in NY to bad luck
CORRESPONDENTS
NEW YORK .- After two accidents involving the film crew of The Sorcerer's Apprentice this week, many in Hollywood are wondering if the film is not "accursed"
On Monday while shooting in Times Square a persecution scene between two cars, the one driven by Cage´s stuntman knocked town two tourists, who resulted with superficial wounds. They were released from hospital after a few hours.
And on Wednesday at Seventh Avenue and
50th Street
, a person non related to production lost control of her truck and crashed against a parked car that struck eight technicians from the crew. Their injuries were slight, but it was a major scare.
"These are painful reminders that making movies is dangerous," stated John Turteltaub, 45, to People! during a visit to Brooklyn.
"As you can imagine, we have an army of lawyers and are super careful making sure that we do not cross the line, but you can never be absolutely sure that everything is going to work out. Still, if our team is hit by a car on the street that has no nothing to do with film security but is simply bad luck, even if it´s being presented as a shooting accident"
Based on a segment of the Disney classic Fantasia (1940), The Sorcerer's Apprentice is about a former student of the sorcerer Merlin, Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage), who in present day New York is looking for an apprentice that can succeed him. In the meantime, he will have to face another great evil sorcerer, Horvath (Alfred Molina), who will make his life impossible.
"These accidents can become emotional distractions. You avoid focusing your attention on them too much and keep them in perspective. Our priority is that all involved are safe and well and that no one gets hurt, but beyond that fact I do not like my job being made public, I do not like seeing scenes of my movie on YouTube, or receiving three e-mails from my aunt Sylvia wondering if I'm alright, "he added.
"The big action scenes are always a big dilemma: if someone comes out injured, you did them wrong, if they don´t turn out being spectacular, you did them wrong too," said the director, adding that he always seeks a balance between what is safe and what makes the scene special.
"Our concern now is not to destroy the rest New York in the scenes were´re going to shoot from now on."
