Washington Square Park was closed for part of Thursday for the filming of The Sorcerers Apprentice, a new Walt Disney Pictures production.
After shooting, executive producer Barry Waldman spoke with WSN about the project.
The Sorcerers Apprentice reunites actor Nicolas Cage with director Jon Turteltaub and producer Jerry Bruckheimer in a New York City-based romantic-adventure comedy that reimagines the short story of the same name (which was also featured in Disneys Fantasia).
Producers and scriptwriters took a nine-minute cartoon piece and turned it into a full-length film.
The piece was used as a building block, Waldman said. The scriptwriters started with the two characters that were in the original piece and added more to give background and a backstory to each character.
Although the premise of the film may seem to be geared toward children, Waldman said the film will be able to transcend all ages, ranging from 16 to 60.
First of all, the National Treasure audience is a huge gamut, Waldman said. This movie is a little darker with more adult fare than the short story, which are elements that Jerry and Jon are famous for. We tried not to be Harry Potter by being older in content, but young in scope. I think college kids will love it.
According to the synopsis, Dave (Jay Baruchel) is attending college when Balthazar, played by Cage, attempts to recruit him to be his protégé.
Some students who have read the short story or seen Fantasia may wonder why Sorcerers is being filmed in Manhattan, much less around NYU.
We scouted both NYU and Columbia for the movie, Waldman said. We chose based on what we thought Daves personality in the movie would be. Plus, NYU feels like you are in New York, whereas Columbia, you could be anywhere in the Northeast.
Many NYU students were excited about the shoot, especially those who are fans of Cage. And many were excited to see the movie, even though it is based on a childrens story.
I feel connected to the film because the shoot was conducted in my own community, CAS freshman Lindsay Forbes said. I especially approve of the adaptation of a much darker and sophisticated story as opposed to the original childrens story.
Die-hard Cage fans showed even more excitement.
Nicolas Cage makes thoroughly enjoyable action movies, CAS senior Emma Shriver said. Even if critics dont think they are cinematographically stellar, I always love them. My boyfriend is also obsessed with Nicolas Cage so I would be forced to go anyways if I didnt already want to.
The Sorcerers Apprentice is slated for release on July 16, 2010.
