Hey Cagemeister, I watched your video, it was really good. Sadly, I never watch Birdy. And what is the song in the video?

Anyone think his swathed face looks like invisible man :)?

Thanks for these recommendations. I have bought Matchstick men but I have not watched it yet. I also plan to buy sonny soon! I'll let you know my reactions when I see them.

yes, the original bro-mance. ha-ha. on a tangent, have you seen matchstickmen? it is also an amazing example of the bond between father and daughter. i won't say anymore, in case you haven't seen it. no spoilers here. but if you have not, i highly recommend it. being a to the bone daddy's girl, it touched me on many levels, and his acting is spot on. also, i recommend sonny. he only has a bit part, but it is his film b/c he directed it. it is shockingly good as well.

This film has the best non-sexual male relationship I have ever seen in a film. It's a shame it is not often spoken of it but it is also a nice feeling to have found such a beautiful underrated film.

Yeah Lula I too believe this is one of his finest performances (at a very young age) and what makes me enjoy it even more is, it feels totally truthful.

Cagemeister, you did a beautiful rendition of the movie in your video, but I love your interpretation of the movie´s moral even better!

And I agree Randy, he´s probably relentlessly hypercritic of his work ... but let´s not forget that artists tend to be self-indulgent on the other side of the coin, so I guess they rely on feedback all the time to balance their act. And we´re here to oblige, right? LOL!

i don't know him, so this is just a guess, but he strikes me as being hyper-critical of his work. never fully satisfied that he got it right. i would venture to guess that in the really real world he probably is plagued with insecurities. it is our job as fans to let him know he IS getting it right. but really, i have yet to know an artist who is ever completely satisfied with their creations. i think i am drawn to these types of people because i am missing the artist gene. can't sing, draw, paint, write...nada, nothing. that is why i value it so much in others.

That's interesting mara..i took it to mean both, that he felt uncomfortable about being so close to his own emotions and the acting style.

But it's precisely that quality that I absolutely love about the film! It's so immediate and emotional for me, I'm just there deeply in it.

That is what I meant by purity (as in undiluted, direct from source, in its original form) and rawness...it's a very immediate and congruent performance I feel, and I love that truthfulness, that way I experience the film on a deeply emotional level. Truly truly love it.

Randy I wonder too if Nic's opinion of this role has changed! I would have thought he would love the authenticity of his performance...maybe he's just being modest!biggrin.gif

Cagemeister you are so right about the hopefulness!smile.gif you know the scene where Birdy is holding his breath under the water and Al is counting 1 mississippi, 2 mississippi.. I love Nic in that scene by the way I think it is awesome acting...That seems to symbolize to me the whole relationship and bond between the two... the desperation...and the hopefulness as Birdy emerges from the water, a dynamic that is echoed in the final scene!

I'll give my view on this: Nicolas Cage was just wonderful in the film so it shocks me to see him down on it. I think he really shines in the second half. The emotion he conveys for birdy and the desperation is done just right. People say he overracts now but this and most of his 80s films are challenging roles which he pulls off. I think Matthew Modine is probably the real star of the film, but both are great.

This film just works allegorically I think for anyone. We've all drifted from our friends. We've all had experiences that we feel have changed us in such a way that we can never return to a happier past. It's really sad but the way this film ends has it that so long as we truly care about each other that will win out in the end-no matter what happens. So in a way its hopeful even in a kind of depressing way.

that's one of thing i like about this forum. everytime i have an idea in mind, i get another perspective. and you are right mara. who knows? half the fun is in the speculation. i wonder if nic even knows. if he would still feel that way today, as he did when he said it. i think as we grow, our ideas shift on an axis, and what was once true, becomes a gray area. i like hearing everyones' opinions, because it makes me think about my own from a different angle. and, if you think about it, art is subjective by nature.... see what you started cagemeister! love what you are doing here, and hope you keep on!!!!

Lula and Randy, I always thought Nic called his performance in BIRDY "emotional vomit" because he had let out too much steam....meaning that he had put personal stuff on it and had revealed to the audience some unresolved feelings of his own. But reading your thoughts makes me think I was mistaken and maybe he was just refering to his method actor ways at the time... Who knows really.

Howdy lu!
i'm sorry he feels that way about it, because i see it as a glimpse of the range he posesses.
often i think the artist tends to be overly critical of his/her work. possibly, in particular, with reference to their early works. i think he was going on instinct here, and it is achingly beautiful. an actor who can put that kind of depth into a character while having his face, one of his largest tools available to him, covered is especially impressive in such a young man relatively new to his craft.

Can't see the vid (my technology limits not a problem your end) but just wanted to make comment on Birdy. I remember it very well randy4sure...it's one I can rerun easily in my mind....it has been very much in my mind lately since reading about Nic taking up flying!biggrin.gif

I don't think Nic is that fond of his performance and has been quoted as calling it "emotional vomit"...

But it is one of my favourites and I feel an incredible tenderness for the rawness of his performance and the story.
It felt very pure to me and that made it potent and emotional smile.gif

Cagemeister, you made my day!! I love this poetic movie too... Watched it as a teen and it moved me so much. To this day, Nic´s monologue at the end makes my hair stand on top. He was obviously deeply involved in it emotionally.

Your video was an excellent tribute and I´m already waiting for your next one, you´ve got a talent for this!

Hi. Thanks a lot for your reply. I am glad you enjoyed my video. I also feel this work is beautiful and underrated and really wanted to present that. I think this is my third favourite Nicolas Cage film (after leaving las vegas and adaptation).

I absolutely adore the themes of the movie Birdy so I made a video of it. My favourite part of the film was the amazing relationship between Nic's character and Birdy so that's what I wanted to highlight in this video.

P.S. I also saw Knowing today and it was FANTASTIC!
