THE SKINNY: While speaking with the television critics at the CBS press tour today about CBSs new midseason horror series HARPERS ISLAND, iF caught up with executive producer Jon Turteltaub to ask him about his forthcoming Disney film THE SORCERERS APPRENTICE which hell be directing.

Inspired by the Mickey Mouse segment from FANTASIA, the new movie is a live-action film that stars Nicolas Cage looking for his new apprentice.

THE SORCERORS APPRENTICE is an old fable of a sorcerer and an apprentice and sorcerer using the magic hes learned to cut some corners to get ahead of himself, explains Turteltaub. So were expanding it into a much bigger context where [the concept is] sorcery is alive and well in the present day. It takes place in New York City and the sorcerer has found his apprentice, its just the apprentice doesnt want to be a sorcerer. So were bringing sorcery and huge stakes in present day Manhattan.

Since the brooms going overboard was a signature moment in the Mickey Mouse FANTASIA segment, Turteltaub reveals that he wont ignore that in his adaptation either.

The brooms will be there, says Turteltaub.

As for a third NATIONAL TREASURE movie, the director says theyre working on some ideas right now.

Its about getting the idea and getting the mystery of that worked out and the historical reality working it out, says Turteltaub. Our feeling on that, as soon as we know what that movie is, well go make it. Theres no reason not to make it. We have some really good ideas and once we get it all worked out, we will go.
