RE: Charlie and Donald

Wow, I missed this convo between you two, mara and Triple/pita b ! smile.gif mara, your words are filled with passion here, not Susan Laroche-like at all! smile.gif

I just came across this Adaptation review, sorry if it's been posted already. The part about the movie not being 'weird enough' drew me in! Too weird for mainstream and yet not 'weird enough'?! smile.gif
For me, the film and Nic should not have lost out on the awards they deserved.

RE: Charlie and Donald and the 12" probiscus

hey Mara

Just a quick update on my quest to watch ADAPTATION again.  I was able to catch the first hour of it yesterday and it brought back alot of thoughts/memories....  The first one being that MY GOD.....Nic really should have won the Oscar for his work in this movie.  He was absolutely brilliant!

Anyhooo.....here I am this morning unable to sleep and I'm going between reading a book called The Tunnel and The Light and cruising the net.  And while cruising the net I ran across this interesting video.....that addresses the moth required to pollinate the unusual orchid with the 12" neck.

It's amazing really.........Enjoy!

RE: Charlie and Donald

hey Mara.....I gotta tell ya.  It's because of your talking about how Charlie and Donald are so amazing that I got in an ADAPTATION mood today.  So, while I was shopping at my neighborhood electronic store I looked for the movie and found it in the comedy section and bought it.   (Funny....but to me the movie as I remember it is more of a drama....but I digress).

I am hoping to watch it tomorrow to see if I missed anything in it many moons ago when I first saw it.   It's always been one of my favorite Nic flicks but it's been a very long time since I watched any of Nic's old movies.  Heck!  I'm lucky if I catch any of his new ones even once these days.

Anyway....If I do get a chance to watch it, I shall remark on your reply to yourself.   LOL!

I will say this right now......I, also, very much see myself in Susan Orlean....or should I say the other way around?

I too want to know what it feels like to be passionate about something again.   I say again....cuz there was a time when I did feel passionate about something and it's a pretty wonderful state of mind.

Sadly......that's pretty much dead and gone.   It's like that poetic muse of mine......

Hopefully, however......while on my continuing quest for growth and passion, something will appear at my doorstep, so to speak....and both my muse and I will bloom once again!

Ah......what one glass of wine can do to a women in the throes of philosophical BS, eh?   LOL!

Ok, replying to my own post (hmm.... dissociation is getting the better of me, lol).

This sriptwriter guy Charlie Kaufman seems to personally know me, LOL. I was so drawn to 3 of the characters...

I too want to know what it feels like to feel passionate about something, but itīs not in my nature, like Susan Orlean.

John Laroche and I share the same collectorīs thirst. And my interests, like his, end abruptly too... Some day I will say a rushed goodbye to my present Nic Cage mania and will give all my DVDs away, LOL...

But of course the character of Charlie played by Nic is the one I feel strangely connected to. Heīs the master of the good prospects gone sour. The amazing boldness he shows in his artistic endeavours is sadly not met with a similar courage in his personal life.

Especially in the scene in which Charlie goes to NYC with the purpose to talk to Susan Orlean, and mounts the New Yorker elevator but becomes incapable of talking to her, who gets on the elevator with him. Heīs in hell in that little space because of his own lack of normalcy. Heīs painfully aware of the chance heīs letting pass by, but he cannot help it. Been there, done that... Itīs not fair to yourself nor to the other person, but, alas!

I canīt wait for the real Charlie Kaufmanīs directorial debut: Synedoche, New York. This is DA MAN. I really hope Nic can play one of his characters again in the future.

Had breakfast with this pair today. Just wanted to share what an amazing movie this is, for those of you who still may not have seen it. Itīs about EVERYTHING, no less. The scriptwriter, the real Charlie Kaufman, is a genius and one of my heroes... Nic absolutely shines playing him. But I think heīs playing aspects of himself too, portraying both his dark and sunny sides for us all to see. If thatīs not to appear emotionally stark naked in front of an audience, I donīt know what it is.

Itīs funny but I think his Charlie side and Donald side are both guiding his career moves... I guess weīve been in a Donald phase lately, and now weīre moving into a Charlie one...
