I asked my dad what the chain was for. He says it's a newer twist on an 18th century gentleman's accessory from days gone by:  the pocket watch.  Guys also don't always have an option of carrying their wallet in the back pocket of their pants.  So they carry it in the front pocket and attach a chain to help it stay in place and also protect it from getting stolen.  Cool huh?
I kinda liked my idea of him being a tripod and needing the chain for protection, but this works too! LOL!
