(OC) So, I don't know, how do you pick your favorite Nicolas Cage movie? I can't do it. The Academy Award winning actor has been in more than 50 of them from, yes, Cher's lovesick baker in 'Moonstruck," snap out of it, to the swashbuckling hero of the "National Treasure" movies. His latest is "Bangkok Dangerous," where he plays a cold-blooded hit man who realizes he might not be so cold blooded after all. Good to see you, Nicolas.
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
Thank you, thank you for having me on the show. Good to see you too.
SAM CHAMPION (ABC NEWS)
(OC) This is, I enjoyed watching it very much because it's, you always, you always bring so much to all of your characters, and then what I heard it's based, it's actually shot in Bangkok.
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
Entirely shot in Thailand, that's right.
ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) And that you actually had a very harrowing experience there.
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
Actually, yeah, there was a military coup in the middle of production. It was 1:00 in the morning, and the guy who was managing the guns said we can't fire any more weapons. There's tanks rolling into the street, and there's a military coup. And I was being directed by two Chinese twin brothers, Danny and Oxide Pang, and one of the brothers looked at me and said, hey, that's "Bangkok Dangerous," and I said, I'm going. I got in a boat and I went up the Chao Phraya River, and I went to the hotel, I got my wife and my little son and my father-in-law, flew them to Korea, dropped them off. Got back on another plane, and flew back to Bangkok, and started filming again, but I didn't know if it was going to go, which way it would go, either way, 50/50, it could have been very terrifying.
ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) So, you come back to Bangkok and you don't have any idea what's going to happen.
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
Yeah, I had no idea if guns were going to be fired. It was pretty terrifying. But I had to finish the movie.
ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) You talk about the brothers. This is the English version of a Thai movie.
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
That's right, well, it's, it's the English, it's still, it's an all-Asian movie.
ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) Right.
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
It's shot with an all Thai crew, the same crew that shot the original, and Chinese directors. And the reason why I thought that would be fascinating is as I continue to make movies, I want to try to have more of an international mind, which means in the way I live my life and also the work that I do, which means going to foreign countries and working with foreign filmmakers, because I think they can find a new way of working with my abilities and perhaps reinvent me in some way. And, so that's why I choose these kinds of movies, they're quite experimental.
ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) But you always seem, Nicolas, to, to be that type of actor, that you just don't want to read your lines, and that, that you want to learn something, as well.
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
Thank you. Yeah, I have to stay interested. I have to keep pushing it and trying to find new ways of expressing myself and also in my own life. You know, I married a Korean lady, and trying to fit into that culture and those feelings of enchantment and also bewilderment, and am I saying the right thing, what's the protocol, the isolation, and all that kind of rolls into this character, as well, cause he's feeling the same way in Bangkok.
ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) Yeah, and he's conflicted. You can tell. You want to see a little bit, you want to see Mr. Cage in action?
AUDIENCE MEMBER (MALE)
Absolutely, absolutely.
AUDIENCE MEMBER (FEMALE)
Yes.
ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) All right, this is "Dangerous Bangkok," "Bangkok Dangerous."
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
That's right.
ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) And to, and to set it up a little bit, you know, he's kind of like a bad dude.
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
Bad guy, yeah.
ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) And you got this new sidekick and you want to kind of, you know, impart some knowledge, let's say.
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
That's right.
ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) Okay, let's take a look.
FILM CLIP FROM "BANGKOK DANGEROUS"
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
You have to learn to read your surroundings. See that man in the red jacket?
ACTOR ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
What man?
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
You're living in a city of mirrors, store windows, glass office buildings, polished steel, eyes in the back of your head.
ACTOR ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
Ah, eyes in the back of my head, huh, boss? I got you now, boss.
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
I'm not your boss. I'm your teacher.
ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) Yeah, get that right. I'm your teacher. But a totally, I love the cast. You know, I didn't recognize a lot of the people.
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
Yeah.
ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) But, you know, there was a total Asian cast.
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
All Asian, I'm probably the only white guy in the movie. Which is, for me that's always interesting when you see different cultures, different races interacting, there's always going to be an undeniable dramatic tension there, and that's fascinating to watch. You know, there's, there's, you see, you want, you want to see people getting along from different cultures, and you want to see how it's going to turn out. And that is another reason why I chose to do the movie. The lady in it is Charlie Yeung. She's a great actress. Good, good woman. She does a lot of charity work around the world. And Shahkrit is a Thai actor. And it's, it is, it is refreshing to work with people from, from around the world who are so talented, and introducing them to the United States, as well.
ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) Well, it's a great introduction. And you're the best person to do it with them.
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
Thank you.
ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) I know they enjoyed it. And thank you so much for getting up. You said you're a morning person anyway.
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
That's true.
ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) We don't get that a lot from actors.
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
Not in this business, no.
ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) Not, no, but continued success...
NICOLAS CAGE ("BANGKOK DANGEROUS")
Thank you very much, Robin.
ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) ...in all that you do and "Bangkok Dangerous" opens in theaters on Friday, September 5th.
ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)
