YEah Lula, the director says he shot some very cool views of NYC because the city (and the loneliness its inhabitants feel) it´s a character in the movie. NYC appears as a blurred background behind Nic in the scenes in which he´s still the yuppy in control of things... and the background gets more and more sharp and clearly-defined as Nic is losing his edge and his mental stability as the story progresses.
I´m with you: offering a bag of dehydrated soup to Alva as a token of peace during the truce is... pure abstract, absurd, parodic genius. During the commentary the director says "What´s that? A vampire´s cure for cold?" LOL.
Nic was absolutely corageous to play this character the way he did. Totally underrated.
I remember Deb. She was extremely sweet. I commend you for having given your Nic movies to her, that was really cool... she must have been very happy to receive them, since she was so ecstatic about Nic.

Ok, I´ve spent all this afternoon and part of the evening cleaning up my kitchen cupboards, which I ABOSLUTELY HATE! And I´m sick of hearing politics talk on the radio, so I had this brilliant idea of playing the Vampire´s Kiss DVD audio commentary, which I belive is the most enjoyable one among the ones he´s taped. While I was about my unrewarding task... I kept thinking that what Nic says in this taped conversation with the director of the movie can be taken as a kind of guideline for his working knowhow... It´s very interesting. For those of you who don´t onw the DVD, I think there´s a transcription of the thing somewhere in Cagefactor.
BTW... the scene in which a shabby and hallucinating Nic talks with a NYC wall is for my taste one of his best. We alternate between him in his present demented condition and him all dressed up like a yuppie in his shrink´s office. His madman delirious slurry diction before the wall is contrasted with his yuppy haugthy preppiness... Talk about character arch!

I agree Mara, I think this is my favourite audio commentary from Nic, and Vampires Kiss is one of my all time favourite films. I remember how I felt after first seeing it, I was in a very strange headspace for many days actually! It is, as you say, magically surreal. Simultaneously funny and very dark, not always comfortable, in some ways really disturbing (like the way the therapist at the end seems to be telling Peter that his behaviour is ok really). Such an intense, chaotic and deeply tragic character, with the bizarre fake yuppy accent with that imploding tension as he becomes the bullying boss is almost more disturbing than the tragic character talking to the wall at the end. I think because the tension is like a most potent kinetic energy which is so completely all consuming that you cannot help but feel it. That wall scene by the way had me feeling so many things simultaneously physically, there were tears streaming down my face and always are each time I watch it, and this kind of twisting pain in my tummy, as well as this kind of crazy about to explode tension that builds up through the film.
My favourite scenes are the face he pulls in the mirror, the 'hallucination' vampire scene, and the bizarre taking soup to his sick secretary scene!!! The film is just genius. And listening to the audio commentary it seems the director and Nic really 'got' each other and created this superb film which is so much greater than the sum of its parts.
I hope I'm recalling this correctly it has been a while since I listened to the audio commentary...Interesting how the director says the city is a character in the film, just like Bangkok is described by Nic as being a character in Bangkok Dangerous!
I think Nic's performance in Vampires Kiss is so completely brave, off the wall and to be honest I can't think where I have seen acting like it, he puts everything out there and isn't afraid to go even further still! And I have to say...the c***roach scene is not what I remember when I think of the film at all!

After reading your review on this movie, I realized it would be a hoot to watch it again. Only problem is, I gave away most of my Nic movies a few years back.....Boo Hoo..............
Hmmm.....maybe I'll have to break down and rent it soon??
