THANKYOU MARA! biggrin.gifthis is the first Nic interview I have had the privilege to read in a long time, the last couple being videos!
Your awesome secretarial skills came to the fore and are much appreciated!smile.gif

He does 'give good interview'!

Nic excels as playing a conflicted character, it is great to hear him talk about the role.
Interesting how he talks about giving himself 'over the heir vision' how about that for surrender and going with the flow.

I agree Rosita, heīs always talking about his interest for other cultures. I wish we, as representatives of different cultures, could show up at his doorstep and show him personally about said differences... *wink, wink*

Thank you so much, Mara for I have some difficulties to download files too and i loved to read what Nic said.
That confirms how serious he's in his job and respectful towards different people.
This desire to know cultures so far from ours is the tool to promote tolerance, respect and finally peace among people.

The more I read about this man, the more I love him.

Ok, here you go.... I happen to have some free time in my hands just now. Just for you, dear Lula:

We never hear the questions, only Nicīs answers. Heīs seated in a warehouse set, in full make-up (pretty sloppy appearance, heīs obviously just shot a scene in which his character was fighting and took the worst part):

I, being from the US, being white, would be in Asia working primarily with Asian actors, and the relationship between my character Joe Enders (sic) (Fade-out)  and Shakritīs character Kong, being a teacher/student relationship, and ultimately a friendship, I think itīs a good message to send out there in the world weīre living in right now.

(Fade-out)

I wanna have a whole new way of presenting myself as Nicolas Cage in filmmaking. And that means going to Bangkok, having a Thai crew, Chinese filmmakers and letting them do to me what they think will fit within their vision, their world. Thatīs brand new. Iīm just giving myself over to their vision. And hopefully theyīll reinvent me. So thatīs what I find really stimulating about this.

(Fade-out)

I think this potentially will go further than the original because of the cross cultural aspects of the characters, getting to know one another. I think that will have more meaning ultimately in the long run. And I think that Dannt and Oxide wanted to have another opportunity to recreate the film because they had ideas to even strengthen the film from the original.

(Fade-out)

I was aware of the way they create from graphic novels, almost itīs like they draw the movie. This movie is already made in their mind. And now is a process of just, you know, bring it to life on film, but they already see it in their head and itīs like a photoplay, itīs like pictures being put together like a collage. Itīs not like anything Iīve done before.

(Fade-out)

I would say that he is perhaps more evil if youīd have to label him, so-called evil, er and heīs trying to find a way, as an American mercenary, heīs coming out of his violence, his demons, because of Fon, er my costar, and her sensitivity, her kindness Because of Thailand, because of Bangkok itself, the city is a huge character in the movie. The people in Thailand, the way they bless one another, the way they respect one another, er how they keep their cool, this is all, I think, changing Joeīs way of life, they way he sees things. Heīs becoming more interested in peace. And thatīs where the character goes into conflict because itīs not his nature. He really canīt be peaceful.

(Fade-out)

The thing I like more about Joe is his international presence. Iīm trying as an actor, and as a human being, to be more international. Iīm trying not to be national. I wanna meet people from all over the world and I wanna receive them well and I wanna learn from  them. And I think that the fact that Joe is here, even though heīs working in this horrible job heīs still interacting with people from other cultures. And thatīs what intrigued me-

(Fade-out)

I was very touched by that scene because the elephant was a baby elephant and he was very sweet. And he had this thing like he was smiling, he had a smiling face. And I was feeding him and I donīt get to act with elephants so often, so that was a highlight.

Hmm, itīs been kinda cool to take dictation from the horseīs mouth. Much sexier than any of my bosses BTW I wish they pronounced so clearly and spoke so slowly It would make audiotyping much easier, LOL!

I donīt know if thereīs been a catalyst woman. But Westonīs birth changed his life forever, epiphany-like.

No woman can rival such an intense fatherly love, I`m afraid... *taking off the "Contender for Miss Catalyst" band from my shoulders*

Thanks for sharing the clip Mara!  It's always lovely and interesting to hear what Nic has to say about film making and his characters.

I found the Joe ENDERS slip very interesting.  Maybe Nic felt that the Joe in BD was pretty much a twin soul to the Joe in WINDTALKERS.   I mean, both of them are, in truth,  in-human killing machines.

Also, in both movies, there is a woman who makes Joe come 'alive' again....makes him want to change his ways....to stop living life the way he's always has.....in essence...... a catalyst for him to become a better man.

I wonder if any woman in Nic's real life has had that effect on him.

Hmm... I just noticed Nic says "the relationship between my character Joe ENDERS and..."

Interesting slip of the mind. Maybe he took some little bits from the despairing Joe Enders and put it into this other unfeeling Joe... there are some similarities in the way this hitman befriends the Thai youngster and Enders becomes friends with Ben Yahzee. Or more probably Iīm totally wrong here, LOL!
