His books are not for the faint of heart (some would say LLV is a downer: for me itŽs a story of unconditional love). I gave The Assault on TonyŽs to a young alcoholic acquaintance of mine. IŽm afraid it didnŽt serve as a cautionary tale as I was hoping, but he appreciated the reading nevertheless, after LLV OŽBrien is kind of like his cursed hero. ItŽs a crying shame (literally) cause heŽs so damn smart and well read and charming.
Very interesting article, Mara. Poor O'Brien was such a tortured soul. It's interesting how his sister wrote something about what it is that turns a problem drinker into a full-blown self destructive alcoholic. Just what is the 'switch' that turns alcoholism on, ya know?
I definitely will be keeping my eyes open for all the books mentioned.

JohnŽs sister, Erin, is doing a biographical sketch of sorts about his late brother in the link below. He was the author of Leaving Las Vegas and other equally riveting books. (IŽve read both Leaving Las Vegas and The Assault on TonyŽs and was very much impressed, they are much, much more than mere alcoholic tales).
