BTW, thank you for the support, it makes me teary eyed. I have been an Army Brat for over 20 years, and I am "used to it", but it's still tough. My DH almost died in a bombing over there, the chow hall bombing they had around Xmas of 2004 when a guy blew himself up inside of their cafeteria (he lost friends and his SGT. was critically injured which was tough to see at the hospital) but by God's grace, he was transfered to another FOB just 3 days b4 the bombing or he would have died (he always sat in the place that was directly hit).

Now we have a baby, 5 months old, that he will be leaving. Our other kids are 6 and 7 and it's sad to say, but they are used to him being gone. In fact, he left today for 2 weeks of training. I am not all for the war, I just feel that there should be more troops in Afghanistan as it was Osama and his ppl that bombed us. Dang it, I'm rambling. lol I don't mean to turn this into politics, sorry. Just, thanky ou all for your support. We are big here on "moral boosters" which is why we have had all the hoopla about Nic Cage moving down the street. The commander here has said he is welcome on post anytime, and I really hope he comes. The soldiers would love to see him (not to mention us wives lol!).

OMG..the mess tent bombing?  I was working casualty affairs at Ft. Lewis, WA during that time and I am still suffering from that time.  They try and tell me I have a form of PTSD, but I just tell them where they can go in true Soldier Girl style! But I still do not watch the news to this day....

Moving on, your use of "DH" for your husband, we have a member here named Bonnie who uses the same nickname, lol. confusedbiggrin

I happened to come across this website and just want to say that we live 20 minutes from the castle he bought here in Bavaria. My husband is in the Army and there is a large number of us here in Vilseck and Grafenwohr (about 10,000). We are getting thousands more soldiers and families here this year.

His purchase of the castle, which me and my kids are going to drive out to today to see if we can get some good pics, was front page news here awhile back. After that, the Army held a "Nicholas Cage Movie Night" where they rolled out the red carpet for those who bought a ticket to screen his latest movie which included a dinner. I speak for a lot of us here when I say we are pretty excited about our new celebrity neighbor, although we understand he won't be here full time. There has been a lot of hype about this.

I don't know if he ever reads this site, but I hope he will come to visit the American families 20 minutes from his new home. He is invited anytime, and it would be a huge boost in moral to the soldiers going to Iraq (including my husband, it will be his 2nd time going, for another year) and to the familes left behind.

We are about to go out there, the curiosity is killing me. lol We may not be able to get close as I understand it's under renovation, but we'll try to get some good pics to share nonetheless. That castle is really close, the kids are on spring break, and there's blue and sunny skies @ about 74 degrees! We have had a very weird winter here, it rarely snowed here in Bavaria and that is NOT the norm!

Patrice...

Patrice,
First let me say a big "Welcome" to the Nicster Mansion! I am in the Army as well and way back in 1997/98, I was also stationed Germany for a year. I was in Hanau. I adored living both in Germany and Europe and still miss it. I was lucky enough to pretty much travel all the time, Scotland, England, France..etc. Hope you get to Oktober fest!

As far as Nic's Castle, yeah that is pretty cool! Also cool, is how the Army did that red carpet deal! WOOHOO.

BTW, I am currently stationed at Fort Hood. Have ya'll had the ahem..pleasure of living in the "Hood" yet? wink

LOL  I lived at Hood from '93-2000, then I moved to Hanau!!  We lived in New Argonner, did all our shopping on Wolfgang Kaserne.  I miss that area, it was so close to Frankurt and I used to love going there!  We are in the Graf/Vilseck area now.  So much construction going on (new HUGE PX) it's crazy!    My dad is still stationed at Ft. Hood (we used to live in Comanche II but they built a house in Harker Heights) but his tour just got extended in Kuwait, so now, ONCE AGAIN, he and my husband will be there together (DH is going to Iraq though, for 15 months UGH!).

Anyways, I haven't made it back to the castle yet, I have some friends that want me to take them out there, but I was literally 10 min. from it today, if that, cuz I took the kids to the Nurnberg zoo and one of the roads I took is the way to his castle.  I found out that when I went there, he was filming for the National Treasure sequel.  I guess that's why those guys driving away in all those cars didn't care that I was there.  I WILL be taking my digital camera next time so I can show ya'll some pics, hopefully, I don't want them to call the Polizei on me. lol  I should be going back on Sat.

WOW!!! It's really interesting. I wish I could have seen it with you! I'm so curious about his home which is the closest to me (I live in Hungary lol )
"It's def. one of those "charming, romantic" looking castles."
Ohhh! I must see it. I'm going to travel there in the future. It could be so nice -
I can't stand not to see it personally.
Of course the pics would be beautiful too, but the real miracle would be the castle itself - 5 metres from me... And if I get there of course I couldn't stand to look inside... Yeah, I know it's almost impossible but I still hope...
Why doesn't he exhibit it as a tourist attraction???
Ok, I know it was another silly question. He has his own problems with his fame - don't do him any more 'harm'.
Further good day!

Thank you!  My DH has been there for a year already.  It was pretty sad for him to leave our 2 kids, ages 6 and 7 now, but we also have a 5 month old girl now that he will be leaving.  I am an Army Brat though (20+ years) so I take it better than most, though I wish he didn't have to go.

So I went to his castle!!!  OMG, it is SO nice!  The batteries in my digital camera were dead (go figure, right) but I took pics w/ my phone.  I tried to upload them w/ the USB but they aren't coming up.  Do I have to have software??  I have a Moto Razr.  I want to show ya'll the pics.  Okay, so here's what happened....

I looked up the town that his castle is in and put it in my navi and we were off...  This place is seriously just about 20 min. from my doorstep, up on a beautiful mountain/hill.  So I saw the castle and started driving up this steep dirt road.  There is a little house off to the side, this is where I parked because there is a "Do Not Enter" sign on the road that leads straight up to his castle.  I got out and there was a dog barking at me and a German lady staring.  I lingered around and took pics for about 5 minutes and then a really expensive Benz drives down from the castle.  There were 2 men in there, a big guy w/ shades driving and I didn't get a good look at the passenger.  They didn't mind me, just kept driving.  Then, this big, stalky guy dressed in a nice business suit and shades starts walking towards me from the castle (I was about 600 ft. from it).  I was thinking, 'Oh shoot, I'm in trouble', but he just said "Hi!" and got in this Porsche lookin' convertible and took off. He was American.  So I was like, ok then, everything is cool, then 2 more cars drive down from the castle.  After they left, I thought to myself, 'What's the worst that could happen?  They'll just ask me to leave..' lol.  So, I got my kids out and we started walking up the road to the castle (the German lady is still staring at us but I just waved).  Yup, the curiosity got the best of me!  We get literally 20 ft. from the big iron gate, which was closed, and there were 3 more cars parked outside.  I was afraid to get too close though.  I know he was making renovations, but I think they may be done.  They said they were replacing the drafty windows, well those looked new to me.  And there was nice green landscaping, a patio set, and a wooden wagon w/ flowers in it inside the castle walls.  We stayed there about 10 minutes, taking pics and enjoying the view. WOW!  We didn't see anyone up there, they may have seen us but didn't come out.  Now I will let you know right now, we are African American, and we hardly look German! LOL  So I think if they had a problem w/ us being there, then they would have said something when they drove past us, not to mention my big black 2006 Nissan Quest that isn't sold in Germany. lol  So anyways, we headed back to the car after taking pics of the ruins and a cave right outside the castle.  The castle is big, from what I read, 9,300 sq. ft.  It's def. one of those "charming, romantic" looking castles.  Kinda creepy too though, and he did not renovate the outside, I guess to keep that old charm to it.

I drove down to the foot of the hill and then stopped to get out and take a pic of me standing under the sign that has the name of the castle, but then a guy came to me w/ a dog and told me I can't take any pictures!  He was really nice though, and didn't speak a lick of English, but by his hand gestures and me repeating what he was saying, I knew what he meant.  He had the same dog that was barking at us so he lives in the little house at the foot of the castle, I'm guessing.  So, I started driving away and once I was out of his sight, I took a few more pics of the castle from the road. lol Couldn't help myself, it was too beautiful, especially w/ the nice weather.

I don't think he was there, but he sure had "his ppl" there and that guy pullin' his security.  I am going back this weekend to take a friend that wants to go.  I will try to get better pics but I am not tryin to be a "stalkarazzi" or anything. lol I can't stand them, but I amlost felt like one today!  I do want to get these pics so ya'll can see them.  I just can't believe he lives so close to us, it's pretty neat.  I hope he comes out our way!

You're a very lucky woman to live so close to the newest home of Nicolas.
And if you're going to take some photos... and share with us of course
You'll be our 'Eternal Fountain' .  LOL...
"He is invited anytime, and it would be a huge boost in moral to the soldiers going to Iraq (including my husband, it will be his 2nd time going, for another year) and to the familes left behind."
It'd be horrible if your husband has to go to Iraq. I wish him a very lucky and really peaceful staying at there (I know it's strange to say because he's going to a war to fight). But I still hope he'll come back with no matter.
I think if Nicolas read this site and your message (and he wants to go to his new castle) he'll visit you soon and encourage you to try to believe in the end of war and in peace if it could come soon!
I hope everything would be better and we'll get over this period of our life.
Please stay with us and tell your opinion about everything - I know I'm curious but if I weren't curious , I weren't a girl!
So please join to our talkings or start a new topic, we are open for everything! biggrin.gif
